Monteux has the rare quality of gathering its big attractions a few minutes’ walk apart. Parc Spirou Provence and its comic-book world, the Wave Island water park and its slides, and the lake of Monteux with its laid-out beach and walking path: three full outings without getting back in the car.
Avignon unfolds the Palais des Papes, the Saint-Bénézet bridge and the lanes inside the walls. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the « Venice of the Comtat », lines up its antique dealers along the canals and holds a large market on Sundays. Carpentras, the neighbouring town, keeps its Provençal market on Friday mornings.
Mont Ventoux is about forty minutes away, for hiking as much as for the legendary climb by bike. Further on lie the hilltop villages of the Luberon, Gordes and the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, and the lavender plateaus of Sault.
